Ancient dragons were a species of intelligent hexapodal reptiles, similar but unrelated to modern Draconiformes. Originating from the early ages of the world, they wielded magic and the elements and waged war against the angels. They were wiped out by Ár's wrath during the Age of Fire.

Name

The name "ancient dragon" is one given by humans to differentiate them from modern dragons. Angels referred to them simply as "dragons" or "stone wings". In their own Draconic language, they referred to themselves as X, meaning Y.

Biology

Ancient dragons broadly resembled modern dragons, with some key differences. Unlike modern dragons, which are tetrapodal reptiles (with one pair of wings and one pair of legs), ancient dragons were hexapodal (with one pair of wings and two pairs of legs). They also had horns and additional rows of teeth. Where the largest modern dragons measure around 19 meters from head to tail, ancient dragons could reach lengths of up to a hundred meters. Ancient dragons also had stony scales harder than steel, with dragonscale being a mythical material among blacksmiths. Like most magical beings of the early ages of the world, they had extremely long lifespans, being able to live for thousands of years.

Abilities

Ancient dragons were highly intelligent, could fly and also wield magic. Draconic magic originated from the worship of the god-king Tzohrag, who was said to be the incarnation of an outer entity. Though unable to breathe fire naturally like modern dragons, ancient dragons could wield the elements and control the weather.
