When the primordial ichor became Ár, it gained consciousness and with it, a soul. This [[Primeval Soul]] is the source of all consciousness, which Ár imparted onto the 24 [[Angels|angels]], and they to every living being they created. So it is that all life in the world is animated with a purpose, inherited from the will of the original being, representing a will to endure. This contrasts with the perpetual stillness of the [[Cosmos]], where fate is the only guidance for the [[Star|stars]]. It is because of this lack of agency that [[Outer entity|outer entities]] seek earthly vessels for their power as a means to enact their will onto the world.

==Death==
Once a being dies, its soul most often dies along with it. In beings that are physically immortal, such as [[Clayfolk|clayfolk]] or [[Ancient dragon|ancient dragons]], their soul still grows old over time, and once it dies their bodies are left no more than lifeless husks. Once a soul dies, it is transported to the [[Realm Beyond]], an afterlife outside of time. Souls cannot be brought back from the Realm Beyond, and attempting to bring the deceased back to life will yield only a [[Wraith|wraith]], a corpse without purpose. Some souls become lost on their way to the Realm Beyond and end up as [[Phantom|phantoms]], roaming the world of the living aimlessly in search of something to fulfill their purpose.
